Kent Experiences

Marine Sciences

Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute

After being introduced to HBOI by Scott Buzby '47, this is the second trip Kent has undertaken to HBOI.  While the previous trip was lead by faculty member Connor Wells, this year’s trip found Science Department Chair Jesse Klingebiel,

Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, CA

Students 和 faculty spent the week in one of two laboratories.  1、由 Dr. 斯图尔特S和in, explores fish biology 和 coral reef ecology. Students were involved in fish dissection, otolith fish aging, In addition to the scientific work,

Lake Iliamna,

阿拉斯加From June 11th- 18th, 2016, Science Chair Jesse Klingebiel, Jayde Bennett ’09 和 a dozen Kent students traveled to Iliamna, 阿拉斯加, 150 miles southwest of Anchorage, in the Bristol Bay region of 阿拉斯加.  Thanks in large part to the generosity of Br和on Sweitzer ’60, 这是澳门永利贵宾会第二次造访这座宏伟的“错综复杂的海湾小屋”. With no roads in the area, Trip Highlights Video Here.

Global Expeditions

Canada

蒙特利尔Collège蒙特利尔的圣安妮举办了他们的第三次国际会议, inviting delegations from their partner schools all over the world.  The theme of the year was The School of Tomorrow.  Five Kent students 和 two teachers spent the week in workshops, hearing speakers, 和 interacting with fellow students.  One activity had students designing their ideal school, which ended up for many groups sounding a lot like Kent!  Other highlights included a homestay with a local family, a jazz concert, an afternoon of curling, 和 dinner 和 traditional dancing at the sugar shack.

这个小组在春季学期通过世界电影的镜头学习法国文化, viewing 和 discussing movies about French history, 食物, 浪漫, 犯罪, plus the New Wave movement 和 being a tourist in the City of Light.  From their quaint hotel in the Quartier Latin, they explored all they had discovered in these various films. From the depths of the old sewers as in 炖菜, up to the hilly cafés of Montmartre from 天使爱美丽, they explored all sides of Paris.  Although the Louvre was a nine-minute race for the characters in 邦德的一部分, Kent students took a breath to enjoy all that it had to offer. The King's Gardens, was an incredible day in the countryside. Paris delighted all senses!

Exchange in Great Britain or Argentina

来自库斯科郊外农村的学生从周一到周五都来albergue上学, as there are no schools in their villages. Our students worked with them on English 和 computer skills, 和 did some maintenance work around the albergue. Families in these villages live in one room adobe huts, with a central fire for heating 和 cooking, which is not very efficient, 和 produces a lot of pollution in the home. The adobe holds the heat even when there is not a fire going.  The trip was capped off with a day trip to Machu Picchu,

The second week after graduation, Kent students traveled to Palm Beach Gardens, 佛罗里达 to volunteer with Hearts of Palm Mission.  Students spent their time working with the chronically homeless, a local 食物 bank, a summer program for children 和 a wildlife sanctuary.  Evenings were spent at the nearby beach,
